The first scripted Australian Amazon Original series will be Back to the Rafters, which will launch on Prime Video in Australia and around the world.
Fans of Packed to the Rafters, rejoice! Amazon Prime Video is reviving the series — bringing us Back to the Rafters — roughly seven years after the award-winning and hugely popular original completed its six-year run.
Back to the Rafters offers the next chapter in the story of the Rafter family, at whose center are parents Dave and Julie, who work to balance their own journey as a couple with the ups and downs of raising a family into adulthood.
Picking up six years since we last saw the Rafters, Back to the Rafters finds Dave and Julie having created a new life in the country with youngest daughter Ruby, while the older Rafter children face new challenges and Grandpa Ted struggles to find his place. As Dave enjoys his new-found freedom, Julie must reconcile her responsibilities to the family. They might not be under the same roof, but the same honesty, love, and laughter bond them more tightly now than ever before.
Featuring in the revival are the original principal cast members, including Rebecca Gibney (Wanted, Winter) as Julie Rafter, Erik Thomson (800 Words, All Saints) as Dave Rafter, Jessica Marais (The Wrong Girl, Love Child) as Rachel Rafter, Hugh Sheridan (Five Bedrooms, House Husbands) as Ben Rafter, Angus McLaren (Home and Away, The Heart Guy) as Nathan Rafter, Michael Caton (Underbelly Files: Chopper, Bad Cop, Bad Cop) as Ted Taylor, and George Houvardas (Frayed, East West 101) as Nick “Carbo” Karandonis.
Commissioned by Amazon Studios and produced by Seven Studios, Back to the Rafters — the first Amazon Original scripted drama in Australia — is created by Bevan Lee (A Place to Call Home), who serves as Lead Writer. Julie McGauran is the Executive Producer and Chris Martin-Jones is the Series Producer.
Back to the Rafters is set to begin production in Sydney in 2020.
Today’s announcement follows earlier ones about new non-scripted Australian Amazon Original series, including LOL: Last One Laughing, a stand-up comedy and competition program hosted and executive produced by Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect); The Test: A New Era for Australia’s Team, a docuseries following the Australian Men’s Cricket team during the 2018/2019 season; and a series of ten Amazon Original stand-up specials featuring ten all-star Australian comedic acts, including Tom Gleeson, Tommy Little, Judith Lucy, and more.
All of these scripted and non-scripted series will be available to Amazon Prime members in Australia and Prime Video subscribers around the world in more than 200 countries and territories.
Stay tuned for updates.
