Mystery Road: Origin tells the origin story of Jay Swan, the Indigenous detective played by Aaron Pedersen in the films Mystery Road and Goldstone and the television series spinoff Mystery Road — all three of which won numerous awards.

Stepping into the role of a young Jay Swan is Mark Coles Smith (Halifax: Retribution, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Gods of Wheat Street, The Circuit).

It’s 1999, and the charismatic young Police Constable Swan arrives at his new station in the Outback. Fresh from the city and tipped for big things, Jay might be the new copper, but he isn’t new to this town. His estranged father, Jack (Kelton Pell, The Gods of Wheat Street), lives here, as does the woman who will change his life forever: Mary (Tuuli Narkle, Bad Behaviour).

The six-episode series will explore how a tragic death, an epic love, and the brutal reality of life as a police officer straddling two worlds, form the indelible mold out of which will emerge Detective Jay Swan.

Mystery Road: Origin, an Acorn TV Original, premieres in the US and Canada with its first two episodes on Monday, September 26, exclusively on Acorn TV. New episodes will debut in pairs through October 10.

Costars include Daniel Henshall (TURN: Washington’s Spies), Toby Leonard Moore (Billions), Steve Bisley (The Heart Guy), Salme Geransar (Clickbait), Clarence Ryan (Cleverman), Hayley McElhinney (The Heart Guy), Lisa Flanagan (Total Control), Caroline Brazier (Rake), and newcomer Grace Chow, amongst others.

A project of Bunya Productions, Mystery Road: Origin is directed and co-written by Dylan River (Robbie Hood). It is produced by David Jowsey (Goldstone) and Greer Simpkin (The Code), with James Grandison (Glitch) as co-producer, Tasma Walton (City Homicide) as associate producer, and Naomi Mitchell (Australia: The Time Traveller’s Guide) as line producer. The executive producers are Blake Ayshford, Andrew Gregory, Sally Riley, and Ivan Sen.
