Acorn TV has set the US premiere date for the fifth and final season of the hit Aussie medical dramedy The Heart Guy.
Say it isn’t so!
Much as it pains me to write this, The Heart Guy is coming to a close after five seasons. (In Australia, the multiple AACTA- and Logie Awards-nominated series just completed its run on the Nine Network.)
Over the course of the show’s first four seasons, we followed Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser, Glitch, McLeod’s Daughters), a high-flying heart surgeon in Sydney whose hard-partying ways land him in trouble with the medical tribunal. Instead of being struck off, he’s forced to work for a year as a GP at a cottage hospital in the town of Whyhope — his hometown, in fact, where his family and ex-fiancée/current sister-n-law still live.
Back in Whyhope, Hugh gets reacquainted with his family, begins working with his new colleagues, learns the truth about one of his brothers, starts to fall for his boss, finds his estranged wife back in his life, and becomes a dad to a baby girl — all the while counting down the days until he can return to Sydney and (mostly) growing up from his bad-boy self, as folks around him deal with their own dramas.
Opening a year after the Season 4 finale, Season 5 finds Whyhope in crisis: The hospital is forced to close after asbestos is discovered. With everyone looking to Hugh to save the day, the question is whether he’ll step up and fight for his hometown.
Joining Rodger Corser to close out the series are regular cast members Nicole da Silva (Wentworh), Ryan Johnson (House Husbands), Tina Bursill (The Moodys), Hayley McElhinney (Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door), Chloe Bayliss (Reef Doctors), Matt Castley (Blind), Belinda Bromilow (The Great), and Charles Wu (Secret City), and new cast member Chantelle Jamieson (Crownies).
The Heart Guy: Season 5 premieres in the US on Monday, July 26, exclusively on Acorn TV.
