Netflix has set the global premiere date for Boy Swallows Universe, the new Australian mystery drama series. Check out the trailer.
In lieu of the usual monthly “Down Under TV Premieres” article today, we have news about a new series headed our way (because there are no premieres of programs from Australia or New Zealand in the US in December, at least not as of this writing).
The new series is Boy Swallows Universe, a mystery drama and epic coming-of-age story that blends the magic and innocence of youth with the brutal reality of the adult world. Adapted from Trent Dalton’s best-selling, iconic Australian novel Boy Swallows Universe, named one of the best literary fiction titles of 2019 by Library Journal, the seven-episode series explores the crossroads where a boy becomes a man, good toys with evil, and the everyday meets the extraordinary.
Set in 1980s Brisbane, Boy Swallows Universe centers on Eli Bell (Felix Cameron, Penguin Bloom), whose father is lost, mum is a junkie, brother is mute, stepfather is a heroin dealer, and babysitter is a notorious criminal. While Eli is just trying to follow his heart and understand what it means to be a good man, fate keeps throwing obstacles in his way.
Boy Swallows Universe, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, January 11, 2024, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
The cast includes Bryan Brown (Darby and Joan), Anthony LaPaglia (Halifax: Retribution), Deborah Mailman (Total Control), Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Travis Fimmel (Black Snow), Phoebe Tonkin (The Originals), Sophie Wilde (Everything Now), Lee Tiger Halley (Crazy Fun Park), and Zac Burgess (Totally Completely Fine).
Written by John Collee (Hotel Mumbai), the series is directed by Bharat Nalluri (MI-5), Jocelyn Moorhouse (Troppo), and Kim Mordaunt (Wakefield). It is produced by Joel Edgerton (The King) and Troy Lum (The Convert), with Andrew Mason (The Water Diviner) executive producing.
