Netflix has announced that Teagan Croft will star as trailblazer Jessica Watson in the biopic film True Spirit.
Based on True Spirit, Jessica Watson’s #1 best-selling memoir, True Spirit the film tells Watson’s incredible true story: In 2010, she was a 16-year-old Australian who became the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop, and unassisted around the world. She accomplished what many thought impossible: navigating some of the world’s most challenging stretches of oceans and surviving seven knockdowns while at sea for 210 days.
Starring in the film as Jessica Watson is Teagan Croft (Titans, The Osiris Child, Home and Away), who enthused:
“I’m beyond excited to be joining Jessica Watson and Ella’s Pink Lady on their voyage! Jessica’s story has inspired me and is one that is universally inspiring, and I’m honoured to be a part of telling it.”
Written by Sarah Spillane and Cathy Randall, and directed by Spillane (Around the Block, This Life), True Spirit is produced by Debra Martin Chase (Harriet, The Princess Diaries, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) for Martin Chase Productions; Susan Cartsonis (Feel the Beat, Aquamarine, What Women Want) for Resonate Entertainment; and Andrew Fraser (Lion) for Sunstar Entertainment. The executive producers are Shahen Mekertichian (Lion) for Sunstar Entertainment; Sarah Spillane; and Brent Emery and Suzanne Farwell for Resonate. The co-producer is Clément Bauer for Resonate.
Jessica Watson will consult on the biopic, which will be shot on location in Queensland and Sydney, Australia, later this year with a predominantly local cast and crew.
