A new TV series from Down Under, co-produced by Acorn Media Enterprises, is coming to telly on both sides of the pond this year: the offbeat family comedy Sando.
The announcement about Sando follows that of Acorn TV’s first series commission: the second season of the hit dramedy-mystery series Agatha Raisin.
Sando is a co-production of Jungle Entertainment, ABC Australia, Screen Australia, and Acorn Media Enterprises (as the North American co-producer), in association with Create NSW.
The six-part series stars Sacha Horler (The Kettering Incident, Jack Irish, Crownies) as Victoria “Sando” Sandringham, a charismatic loose cannon CEO and public face of a popular discount furniture store chain, as she tries to reconnect with her estranged family in order to win back her beloved company, Sando’s Warehouse.
Sando is Australia’s queen of the discount furniture package deal. She built her empire on being a down-to-earth larrikin and is something of a national treasure. Well, that is, to all but her family. They banished her a decade ago after she had a one-night stand with and got pregnant by her daughter’s fiancé — shocking news revealed to everyone at the couple’s wedding, no less!
Now, after a health scare, with her career on a precipice and her professional nemesis, Tony (Rob Carlton, Conspiracy 365, Underbelly), primed to push her into the abyss, Sando is determined to rekindle the family relationship. She needs them, and in spite of their initial apprehension (and unbridled hatred), they’ll soon discover they might actually need her, too.
Sando co-stars Firass Dirani (House Husbands, Underbelly), Phil Lloyd (Review with Myles Barlow, At Home with Julia), Krew Boylan (A Place to Call Home, Wild Boys), Adele Vuko (Skitbox, Underbelly), Uli Latukefu (The Heart Guy, Marco Polo), and newcomer Dylan Hesp.
The series is created by Phil Lloyd (Neighbours) and Charlie Garber (Here Come the Habibs!), directed by Erin White (Little Lunch) and the Van Vuuren Bros. (Bondi Hipsters), and produced by Chloe Rickard (No Activity).
Acorn Media Enterprises has secured all rights for Sando in North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, as well as secondary rights in New Zealand and Australia. Acorn Media International will distribute the series in the English-speaking territories.
Sando, which recently wrapped filming in Sydney, will make its North American premiere as an Acorn TV Original on Acorn TV in the late spring/early summer 2018.
Stay tuned for updates.
