There is just one TV series from Down Under premiering in the US this month, and it is the hit Australian drama The Heart Guy, which returns with its second season.
On of my favorite new series premieres of 2017, this Aussie drama stars Rodger Corser (Glitch, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Rush) as Dr. Hugh Knight, a brilliant bad boy of a heart surgeon in Sydney whose professional penance for his hard-partying ways is a one-year stint as a GP in his small, rural hometown of Whyhope.
When we left Hugh at the end of Series 1, things were looking pretty bad for him. His now-former boss, Penny (Hayley McElhinney, The Babadook), decided to pull up stakes and move to Sydney for a new job, just as Hugh realized (too late) that he cares for her. Adding salt on his wound was his new boss, the brash and utterly uncouth Nora Gumbleton (Helen Thomson, A Place to Call Home).
The new season opens with Hugh in Sydney to witness a surgical team implanting into a patient (not a pig — wink, wink) the artificial heart he designed. He and Penny also have a date for dinner. What he doesn’t know yet is, Penny has a new man in her life.
Back in Whyhope, Hugh’s ex-fiancée, Charlie (Nicole da Silva, Wentworth, Rush), is trying desperately to get husband Matt (Ryan Johnson, Home and Away, Out of the Blue), Hugh’s brother, to come home after leaving to clear his head. For a month. Meryl (Tina Bursill, Neighbours, Home and Away), Hugh’s mum, has won the mayoral election, but she discovers something that could impact her life as well as her political career. And Hugh’s dad, Jim (Steve Bisley, East of Everything, Water Rats), is rushed to the hospital, not once but twice.
At Whyhope’s cottage hospital, Nora is making life a misery for the staff and endangering the patients. (If you thought no one could have worse bedside manners than Doc Martin‘s Martin Ellingham, you’d be mistaken. And he’s at least competent in his work.)
Meanwhile, Hugh is counting down the days, hours, and minutes until his year of atonement is up. He just needs to stay on the straight and narrow until them.
Featuring Chloe Bayliss (Reef Doctors), Matt Castley (Blind), Belinda Bromilow (Packed to the Rafters), Charles Wu (Australia Day), Brittany Clark (Shortland Street), and Angus McLaren (Packed to the Rafters), The Heart Guy: Series 2 premieres in the US on Monday, February 5, exclusively on Acorn TV and the Acorn TV channel on Amazon.
