AMC+ announced today the US streaming premiere date for Season 2 of the Australian period drama, The Newsreader. Check out the trailer.
The Newsreader, a critically-acclaimed, multiple-award-winning, and International Emmy®-nominated period drama series, is set in the 1980s in the frantic world of broadcast news, where misogyny and sexism were rampant and could create roadblocks, stall, or ruin careers.
It stars Logie Awards winner Anna Torv (Mindhunter, Fringe) and Logie Awards nominee Sam Reid (The Vampire Lestat, Lambs of God) in the lead roles. Torv plays Helen Norville, the first female newsreader of the ratings-dominant News at Six, and Reid plays Dale Jennings, initially a junior reporter for News at Six in early 1986, whose ambition to anchor a bulletin leads him to become Helen’s producer. In Season 1 (affiliate link), the two become romantically involved, attracting media attention, while Dale grows increasingly concerned that his private life and personal secrets may be exposed on screen.
Set in 1987-1988, Season 2 finds the nation in flux amid election drama, financial upheaval, and a cultural reckoning. As Australia grapples with its identity, Helen and Dale must contend with rising public profiles, intensifying office politics, and a ruthless new network CEO, and confront who they are to each other and to the world.
The Newsreader: Season 2 premieres in the US with two episodes on Thursday, August 7, exclusively on AMC+ and its digital channels, including AMC+ on Prime Channels. One new episode will drop each Thursday through September 4.
The second season cast also includes William McInnes (NCIS: Sydney), Michelle Lim Davidson (After the Verdict), Marg Downey (Fisk), Chum Ehelepola (Nautilus), Chai Hansen (Apple Cider Vinegar), Stephen Peacocke (RFDS: Royal Flying Doctor Service), Phillipa Northeast (Territory), Rory Fleck Byrne (This Is Going to Hurt), Daniel Gillies (Virgin River), and Robert Taylor (Longmire).
Filmed in Australia, The Newsreader is a production of Werner Film Productions for Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It is created by Michael Lucas and executive produced by Brett Sleigh, Sally Riley, Joanna Werner, Stuart Menzies, and Emma Freeman, who also directs.
