Netflix has announced the start of production, along with the cast and crew, for My Brilliant Career, a new period drama series adaptation from Australia.

Production is underway in Adelaide, South Australia, on My Brilliant Career, based on Miles Franklin’s beloved Australian novel of the same name. This is the first television adaptation and the second filmed adaptation of the work, following the 1979 award-winning feature starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill.
First published in 1901, My Brilliant Career centers on Sybylla Melvyn, an imaginative and willful young farm girl who feels stifled by the monotony of her life in rural Australia. Sybylla dreams of being a writer and yearns for creative freedom and independence, but feels hemmed in and put upon by what her family and 1890s Australian society expects of her.
After publication, the story resonated deeply with a rising generation of young Australian women who longed for the freedom to shape their own destinies.
Starring as Sybylla in Netflix’s series is Philippa Northeast (Territory, The Newsreader, Home and Away). The cast also includes:
- Christopher Chung (Slow Horses, Blitz) as Harry
- Anna Chancellor (My Lady Jane, Outrageous) as Mrs Bossier
- Genevieve O’Reilly (Andor, The Dry) as Helen
- Kate Mulvany (Hunters, Elvis) as Augusta
- Jake Dunn (What It Feels Like for a Girl, The Ballad of Renegade Nell) as Frank
- Alexander England (Black Snow, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) as Julius
- Sherry-Lee Watson (Thou Shalt not Steal, Heartbreak High) as Nell
- Miah Madden (Paper Dolls, The Clearing) as Betty
Developed and written by Liz Doran (Barons, Please Like Me), the series is directed by Alyssa McClelland (Amandaland, Sex Education) and co-producer Anne Renton (The Good Doctor, Good Cop/Bad Cop), and co-written by Sarinah Masukor (Population 11, Good Cop/Bad Cop) and Rachael Turk (Sunshine, The Principal).
The series is a production of Jungle Entertainment, executive produced by Jungle’s Chloe Rickard (Good Cop/ Bad Cop, Population 11), Liz Doran, and Alyssa McClelland. Paul Ranford (Territory, Stateless) is the producer, with Courtney Wise (On The Ropes, Dance Academy) as co-executive producer and Shari Sebbens (Top End Bub) as associate producer.
My Brilliant Career will stream exclusively on Netflix (date tba). Stay tuned for updates.
