The beauty of Waiheke Island belies the badness that happens in The Gulf, the new New Zealand-German mystery-crime drama that debuts in the US tomorrow.

Two people, injured in a car crash, are flailing under water. Only one makes it out alive.

The survivor is Detective Senior Sergeant Jess Savage (Kate Elliott, Wentworth, Dear Murderer). The deceased was her husband, Alex.

A boy, ill-dressed for the cold, stands alone in the dark in the middle of the road, found by a bus driver while on his route.

The lad turns out to be Nathan, who vanished without a trace five years ago and presumed to be dead when the police investigation found evidence that supported that theory. Except they were wrong.

So begins The Gulf.

Over the course of six slow-burn episodes, the series follows Jess, a Waiheke local, and her (unwanted) city slicker partner, Detective Sergeant Justin Harding (Ido Drent, Offspring, The Making of the Mob), as they investigate various crimes on her home patch, including kidnapping and murder.

Even though she’s been released from hospital and is back at work, Jess is still in pain, emotional and physical, and relies on morphine pills to help her through the latter. Head injuries from the crash also cause her to suffer a bit of amnesia.

One thing Jess is sure of, though, is that someone tampered with the car and deliberately caused the accident she and the now-murdered Alex were involved in. She just needs to figure out why. But her memory loss is interfering, and her colleagues aren’t being as cooperative as she would like. (Jess is more a vinegar than honey type — just sayin’.)

Meanwhile, Jess’ daughter, Ruby (Timmie Cameron, Shortland Street), is hiding something from her mum (as are others), as Jess starts to regain bits of her memory — including something that comes as a shock.

The series costars Jeffrey Thomas (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena), Mark Mitchinson (Straight Forward), Alison Bruce (The Almighty Johnsons), and Pana Hema Taylor (The Brokenwood Mysteries).

The Gulf premieres in the US with its first episode tomorrow, Wednesday, December 4, exclusively on Sundance Now and its digital channels, including Sundance Now on Amazon. New episodes will be added every Wednesday.
