Miss Fisher fans, rejoice! The wait for the highly-anticipated feature film is almost over!
Acorn TV announced today that Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears, the streamer’s first feature film, will have its world premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in the US on January 4, 2020.
Based on the international hit television series and Kerry Greenwood‘s best-selling murder mystery books, the feature film will then go into wide release in Australia on February 27, followed by its US premiere in select theaters and on Acorn TV in March 2020.
Essie Davis (Lambs of God, Game of Thrones, The Babadook) returns in the eponymous lead role as the glamorous private detective, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, whose exploits in 1920s Melbourne, Australia, lead her to murder, mystery, and mayhem from London to British Palestine.
The film opens with Phryne rescuing Shirin Abbas, a young Bedouin woman who has been thrown into jail in British Mandated Palestine for making trouble at a time of colonial unrest. After a perilous escape from Jerusalem, Phryne rejoins Shirin as a fellow guest in the home of Lord and Lady Lofthouse for the London season, and pledges to help her right a wrong and to discover the truth about the Crypt of Tears — an ancient crypt rumored to lie somewhere beneath the rolling sands of the Negev Desert.
Filmed on location in Melbourne and Morocco, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears features costars from the TV series, including Nathan Page (Underbelly) as Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter) as Aunt Prudence, and Ashleigh Cummings (NOS4A2) as Phryne’s loyal companion, Dorothy “Dot” Collins.
The international cast includes Britain’s Rupert Penry-Jones (MI-5, Whitechapel, Silk), Egyptian star Kal Naga (Vikings, The Last Post, Tyrant), and Australia’s own Daniel Lapaine (Catastrophe, The Durrells in Corfu, Zero Dark City).
From a screenplay by Deb Cox, Miss Fisher & The Crypt of Tears is directed by Tony Tilse (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Serangoon Road, Wolf Creek) and produced by Fiona Eagger, with Eagger and Cox also serving as executive producers for Every Cloud Productions and Lucy Maclaren as co-producer.
Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears is an Every Cloud Productions feature, with principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with Film Victoria. Private investors and fans contributed more than $AUS1 million to the budget for the film through an extraordinarily successful crowd funding campaign.
