A Place to Call Home Collection

Like a mashup of That Girl and Get Smart (with a nod to The Avengers?) but set in Swinging ’60s Melbourne, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries is a fun romp of a series.

It follows Peregrine Fisher (Geraldine Hakewill, Wanted), the niece of the Honourable Phryne Fisher, the latter of whom has gone missing over the highlands of New Guinea and is presumed dead.

Thus Peregrine, just sacked from her job as a hairdresser, inherits a windfall from the famous aunt she never knew, including a flash car and amazing house. It appears she inherited some of Phryne’s personality, as well, as Peregrine can be a bit reckless and sassy and has a natural sense of curiosity plus a keen instinct for solving crimes — all of which comes in handy as she sets out to become a world-class private detective in her own right. (That Peregrine is also into the fashions of the day almost goes without saying.)

As it happens, a member of The Adventuresses’ Club, a group of exceptional women to which Phryne Fisher belonged, is connected to the murder of a model, found dead during a bridal fashion show. So voilà, Peregrine’s first case, during which she poses as a staff member at the clothing design company and meets the dapper, smart, and ambitious Detective James Steed (Joel Jackson, Safe Harbour).

Peregrine also gets help along the way from members of the club, including Birdie Birnside (Catherine McClements, Sisters), an ex-member of WW2 Special Forces and head of The Adventuresses, Italian scientist Violetta Fellini (Louisa Mignone, Secret City), and Samuel Birnside (Toby Truslove, Dreamland), Birdie’s brother and the club’s resident gadget man.

In the second episode, Peregrine is hired by a TV network executive to investigate the murders of a popular pop singer and a backup dancer on an American Bandstand-like show, which involve Peregrine’s ex-boyfriend and Violetta’s too. The penultimate episode of the season finds Peregrine infiltrating a top-secret military facility to investigate the murder of Birdie’s best friend. And in the last episode, Peregrine joins a cooking class taught by Samuel’s former sister-in-law to investigate the murder of the culinary company’s chef.

The four feature-length episodes feature Greg Stone (Glitch) as Chief Inspector Sparrow, Katie Robertson (Rosehaven) as Constable Connor, and James Mason (Neighbours) as Peregrine’s ex-boyfriend Eric.

A ratings hit in its native Australia, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries premieres in the US today and is now streaming on Acorn TV and the Acorn TV channel on Amazon.
